mossanova
Mosses have been on earth for about 400 million years. They are very adaptable to different environments. They can withstand heat and draught. Isolating bioactive ingredients from mosses for human use is therefore very attractive. Thanks to biotechnology, the moss is not taken from nature, but is sustainably produced. The plant is grown on a large scale in a liquid and sterile environment with limited water. In the bioreactor, the mosses are exposed to red LED light, which they need to grow. They are shaken to maintain a gas exchange between carbon dioxide and oxygen. After two to three weeks, the valuable ingredients in the moss cells can be harvested.
moss evolution
For millions of years, mosses have been developing a lot of ingredients to protect them from harsh environment conditions. The Moss Evolution is a fascinating story to tell. Who could know this better than Ralf Reski, distinguished pioneer in moss research at the University of Freiburg? One of first to cultivate mosses in the lab, to sequence and reprogram mosses’ genomes.
